CARPET STAIN REMOVAL – Tips & Tricks

There are some tips and tricks we have when that carpet or rug accident first happens.
Here are some hints to help you know what to do and to minimize any damage or discoloration to your carpets and rugs.

I'VE JUST HAD A FLOOD

First steps:

  • If it’s not obvious where the leak’s coming from, turn off the water mains
(usually found under a metal plate at the front of your property)
  • If it’s a fairly large flood, call us straight away 24/7 – (09) 576 -4751
  • Remove any furniture from the area
  • If it’s safe to do so, unplug any electrical appliances in the immediate area
  • Don’t try and lift the carpet or mop up the water yourself, you may just be
pushing the water out over a larger area

Even relatively small floods are usually an insurance matter, they quite often are worse than they look as they tend to spread out and soak to quite a large area

I'VE JUST HAD A WINE SPILL

Draw up with paper towels. Apply pressure with your hand. Keep going with fresh paper towels until the paper towels are dry.

Flush out with clean water once you’ve soaked up the majority of the spill. Flush the water on the spill and soak it up with paper towels.

Q. I’ve heard people say it’s best to dilute red wine stains with white wine?

A. Fresh water will do just as good a job. Personally, we’d rather drink the white wine while we deal to the spill..!!

I'VE JUST HAD TEA OR COFFEE SPILT ON MY CARPET - NATURAL DYES

Coffee and tea are natural dyes, although these types of spills are not so urgent as discoloration will take a longer period of time.

Again the ‘draw up flush out’ technique is best

Draw up with paper towels. Apply pressure with your hand. Keep going with fresh paper towels until the paper towels are dry.

Then flush out with clean water once you’ve soaked up the majority of the spill. Flush the water on the spill and soak it up with paper towels.

Call us as soon as you can, but it’s not urgent…

I'VE JUST HAD DYE SPILT ON MY CARPET - ARTIFICIAL DYES

For artificial dyes spilt on your carpet, like soft drinks, cordial drinks & syrups, ice blocks etc..

It’s best to try the draw up flush out technique again, so you:

Draw up with paper towels. Apply pressure with your hand. Keep going with fresh paper towels until the paper towels are dry.

Then flush out with clean water once you’ve soaked up the majority of the spill. Flush the water on the spill and soak it up with paper towels.

These spills are fairly urgent to get us in to minimise the stain, carpets are natural receptors to dyes, so it’s quite important to get us to neutralize the stain as soon as possible…

I'VE JUST PUT AN OILY MARK ON THE CARPET

Oily marks from things like grease, tar, make-up, baby oil, suntan lotion, crayons etc are usually quite stable, so they’re not especially urgent to deal with – apart from the visual annoyance obviously.

As long as you call us in with few days, they can usually be successfully removed.

Just scrape up the excess or mop up if a bit runny, remove as much of the oil as possible without spreading it out.

Don’t apply water or any other liquid as oil repels water and it will probably just carry the oil out over a larger area.

We wouldn’t recommend using any of the available stain removers you see advertised on these oily marks, apart from the Cavalier Bremworth Carpet Stain Remover and only on smaller areas. Apply Cavalier Bremworth Carpet Stain Remover sparingly and once only.

I'VE JUST FOUND CHEWING GUM ON THE CARPET

Don’t try to apply anything to this.

Best you can do is to try and chip it off as best you can & call us…

I'VE JUST HAD AN INK SPILL ON MY CARPET

OK, best to leave this one to the professionals..

By attempting to remove ink spills yourself, you tend to remove the easy part – about 70% of the stain and what you leave behind is the hard part, which you’ve probably just made harder to remove.!

Don’t apply water or any other type of liquid as you’ll just spread the stain even more.

The good news is these types of spills are fairly stable, so it’s not an urgent matter, just call us with a day or so…

I'VE JUST GOT BLOOD ON MY CARPET

First of all, never apply water to blood, you’ll just spread it over a larger area.

In fact it’s best not too even try and mop it up as again you’ll just be spreading it and forcing it deeper into the pile. If it’s very large blood spill, then ok, try and soak up the bulk of it, but if that’s the case, you’ve probably got more issues on your hand than cleaning your carpet..!!

For smaller areas, it’s best just to let the blood dry before calling us in to clean it.

Fairly stable so again, no real urgency

I'VE JUST HAD VOMIT OR FAECES ON MY CARPET

OK, no need to panic here. This usually looks worse than it is, it’s more of a hygiene issue than any real damage to your carpet.

First, if there is any liquid, soak that away with paper towels or tissues. Then scrape up any solids that are easily removable, trying not to spread the spill any further. Consider even using a vacuum cleaner nozzle to remove some of the solids, bearing in mind you’ll have to clean that later.

This is a semi-urgent situation, get us in as soon as possible, but it’s ok to leave it til the morning.

Don’t be embarrassed! You’re not the first and you won’t be the last to find yourself in this situation. We will deal with this professionally and discreetly.
